Overview

Stand-up Climedy is a pre-flight entertainment focused on sharing Extreme Weather Events (EWE) preparation info via a series of stand-up comedy shows.

Extreme weather is the new normal. The main types include heat waves, cold waves, and tropical cyclones.

You might be asking yourself, what motivated us to design a solution that combines comedy, traveling, and EWE's?

Data from Desk Research

We realized that our group consists entirely of foreigners and that we are all unprepared for any EWEs that can occur in Switzerland. We found that foreigners made up 30% of Ticino’s population, so we wondered, are they also unprepared like us?

Process

The starting point was a Brief framed as a question:

‘How might we help international travelers/foreigners in Ticino better prepare for extreme weather events?’

Research plan

The goal of the research is to focus on what matters most to know where to make the biggest impact. To beggin accomplishing this, we aimed to understand the touchpoints of our target user by conducting an Ecosystem Map.

We found out that we would need to talk not just to foreigners, but also people or organizations they interact with:

From this we identified 4 actor types that we wanted to investigate more.

The next step was to find out what already exists in the market to get prepared.

We defined our top 4 learning objectives and started recruiting:

User research

We conducted interviews and surveys for a broader outreach: our interviewees consisted of people that had experienced or not an EWE while abroad. We also talked to AirBnB hosts to fulfill the accommodation service actor type.

We selected the most insightful answers from interviews and surveys:

Key insights taken from interviews.

What did we discover?

By clustering answers from User Research, we discovered behavior patterns among participants. This point was also useful for noting contradictions found among the data points. Key topics were highlighted and served as a guide later on in the ideation phase:

  1. Responsibility
  2. Unpreparedness
  3. Support
  4. Alerts

Many stated not being prepared because of the negativity related to thinking about EWEs. Most are convinced governments are responsible for informing and diseminating info about these rare events.

Experience map

We mapped insights from User Research against the experience to identify where the hotspots or gaps are.

Insights

Next we turned observation & findings into actionable insights. Here we wanted to find out what are the opportunities for solving the users pain:

Archetype

We elaborated an archetype based on behaviour and specific characteristics found in insights. This one in particular came from the insight opportinity to design for laziness:

Problem Statement

After the research phase, I can deduce that the responsibility of getting informed and prepared needs to be taken away from the user. For that we did a second round of HMW's based on the Care-free User archetype:

We did a voting session and selected the most compelling HWM

So, based on the design for laziness opportunity, we wanted to know HMW...

Leverage Existing Travel Procedures to Share Engaging Information (in a Positive Way) to Help Foreigners Better Prepare for EWEs?

Why existing procedures and in positive way? because we learned that our archetype simply won't make the effort to get informed and doesn't want to think about the negatives related to an EWE.

What came out?

After some group voting we discused similarities in our choices and realised that we have identified a common ground:

  1. Resource: information about preparation presented in stories (experiences of others) to make it more relatable.
  2. Essence: engaging, positive & low effort.

To finally design the solution we used an ideation tool called Crazy 8 drawings, which allowed us to become artists: we had to sketch 8 quick ideas in 8 minutes.

Outcome

Finally, we used the Onliness Statement to help with defining and communicating the idea in one sentence; Stand-up Climey is...

“The only pre-flight entertainment content to offer info about EWE preparation in the form of stand up comedy”

No effort is required, just get on the plane, fasten your seatbelt, and watch the emergency instructions. Right after this you will be able to enjoy stand up comedy with funny stories about EWEs that present learnings about preparation in a positive and engaging way.
